Strychnine - November 2025 LEGACY

Strychnine is a popular poison choice in literature and murder mysteries, probably due in part to the very noticeable and dramatic symptoms an acute exposure can cause -- these include severe muscle spasms and convulsions which eventually lead to death by asphyxiation. It is believed that Alexander the Great may have been poisoned by strychnine in 323 BC, though the chemical compound itself was not characterized until 1818. Despite its well-known toxicity throughout history it actually gained popularity as a recreational stimulant and athletic performance enhancer during the late 1800s -- similar to caffeine. It also appears to have seen some use as an experimental treatment for depression and other mental illnesses. Yikes.
