Toxicity: Contains PIPERIDINE ALKALOIDS coniine, N-methylconiine, conhydrine, pseudoconhydrine and gamma-coniceine. Acute toxicity results in respiratory collapse and death. Conium maculatum is the plant that killed Theramenes, Socrates and Phocion. In ancient Greece, hemlock was used to poison condemned prisoners.
